The Syriac chant is deeply rooted in the civilizations of the Near East before Christianity. It is simple and austere and was transmitted orally, as no annotations existed. The same words can have several melodies and the same melody can have different words.
 The independent strophic Syriac Hymn is attributed to Saint Ephrem Syrus (306-373), the Syrian Saint, Doctor of the Church and hymnographer. Born in Edessa, Saint Ephrem countered the hymns of Bardaisan (154-222), a Syrian hymnographer astrologer philosopher from Edessa.
 The Syriac melody has limited range. It is performed with 3, 4, or 5 notes. It has a free varied rhythm and a simple structure. Singing it professionally means singing it with free rhythm by improvising, without altering the structure of the melody.
 To be sung correctly, this unique melody requires technical excellence and deep passion for the music. In style, the Syriac chant does not belong to the Arabic music system, nor the eight Byzantine types, not the Gregorian, but is a special pleasure to be enjoyed in its own rite.
 Usually it is sung a capella and sometimes it is accompanied by percussion instruments: The naqus (hand bell), the marwaha (rattle) and the small and large Cymbals.

Biography :
Specialist and professional performer of traditional Middle Eastern folks and Arabo Andalusian songs, Syriac and Ancient Maronite chants, Ghada Shbeir has an exquisite talent and the ability to move easily and with professionalism from traditional folk songs to religious chants. She has earned frequent comparison to some of the best Middle Eastern singers.

Born in Lebanon, after graduation from high school, Ghada Shbeir moved to the USEK (Universite St. Esprit - Kaslik - Lebanon) to pursue a music career. Her big break came as a soloist of the USEK choir that highlighted her professional talent throughout the media.

After earning an advanced degree with high distinction in traditional Arabic music performance, Ghada Shbeir received her Master's degree in Musicology from the same university. Due to her unique style in performing, she became a professor of traditional Arabic singing techniques at the USEK, AlMuwashshah singing techniques at the Lebanese University and sacred Syriac chants at the National Conservatory of Lebanon.

Furthermore, she participated in several festivals, concerts and conventions. Ghada presented a lot of conferences in Lebanon and all over the world (Paris, London, Canada, Estonia, Slovakia, Greece, Egypt, Oman, Abu Dhabi, Spain, etc.) She has also worked with “Enchordais” for five years. During this period, Ghada performed in many concerts and festivals, in addition to registering with “Enchordais” a CD containing traditional Arabic music. Furthermore, she is working, not exclusively, with Zaman Production, in France for organising concerts in Europe.
